Dental Bridges and Dental Crowns
What are dental crowns?
Crowns are a great way to restore a damaged tooth to its original size and shape, or to supply additional support for a previously repaired tooth. Also referred to as “caps”, crowns completely cover all visible parts of a tooth. Dr. Bergman trims down the damaged tooth and shapes it in order to accommodate the dental crown. Impressions of the tooth are taken and the dental crown is shaped to fit. The dental crown is then simply cemented onto the damaged tooth to complete your new smile.
What is a dental bridge?
A dental bridge is an alternative to a dental implant, and consists of replacing a missing tooth. While dental implants are kept in place by a surgically implanted root, it is the surrounding teeth that support a dental bridge. Dr. Bergman will secure your bridge to two healthy teeth in order to replace a missing tooth in the most secure way possible. A dental bridge will improve your ability to chew and speak and give you a healthy looking smile.
How long do the procedures take?
Dental bridges and crowns typically require 2 visits to complete. The first visit consists of a consultation with Dr. Bergman to make sure you are a good candidate for these types of procedures. He will then take impressions of your teeth that are then used to create a mold for your replacement tooth. The second visit consists of physically placing the dental crown or dental bridge into place.
Recovery and Care
It may take a few days to get used to the new look and feel of your replacement tooth. Dental bridges and crowns can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years before they need to be replaced. With regular brushing and flossing habits they can last even longer. Dr. Bergman recommends brushing at least twice and flossing at least once every day.
